my weekend

Last week I splurged and bought the audio book of one of my favorite books of all time, The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini. If you haven't read this book yet-  get it now. A movie has recently been made of the story, but I doubt it could be as good as the book. I'm also looking forward to reading Khaled Hosseini's second book, A Thousand Splendid Suns.

My boyfriend and I listened to the Kite Runner audio book on the way up to Lake Geneva this weekend. We went up there for a wedding. The weather was perfect and we had a great time. One of the highlights of the weekend was stopping at a pumpkin farm to pick our own pumpkins- a new experience for me. There were pumpkins as far as the eye could see. We wandered through the fields for a while until we found two nicely-shaped specimens, which we'll carve into jack-o-lanterns in time for Halloween.

I'm enjoying the audio book very much. It'll be great to listen to on my hour-long bus commute to and from work. I've just discovered that I can get audio books much cheaper online at Amazon. Do any of you have recommendations for good audio book titles?

In the news

I am intently following the
news of the protests in Burma. Thousands of pro-democratic citizens bravely defied their brutal military dictatorship and took to the streets to protest recent hikes in fuel costs. Their protests have been met with a heavy hand by the country's military. People have been killed and many, including Buddhist monks, arrested by the regime. Those people face an uncertain future, most likely torture and indefinite terms of imprisonment. Read about the human rights abuses by the government here
.

To prevent more news from leaking out to the world, the Burmese government has shut down the internet and international cell phone signals. The military is searching people for cameras and cell phones.

President Bush has expressed anger of the situation and has initiated stricter sanctions against the country. Sadly, it appears none of this has gotten the attention of the Burmese government.

Sunday

It's Sunday night and I'm feeling very content. I had a wonderful weekend filled with visits with friends and family. I went out for brunch with one of my long-time friends. We've been friends since the 7th grade. She and I went to have lunch and talk about our favorite topic...men. The difference now is that we're both happily coupled up. No more asking,  "Where are are all the good men?".

After visiting with my friend I went to visit my cousin. She has two adorable kids, ages 2 and 5. I know everyone says this about the kids in their life...but really, these are two of the cutest, smartest, and most well-adjusted kids you could ever meet. I'm trying to observe my cousin's mothering skills carefully so that hopefully I can learn a few things, you know, for when my times comes to have little ones.   ;-)

This weekend I'll be heading out of town for a quick getaway to Lake Geneva. My honey and I are invited to a wedding. We'll also be celebrating our one year anniversary. (Insert joy here.) Today at Target I spent a long time picking out a card for the occasion. I've never bought a romantic card. A lot of the cards are geared towards married couples, so it took me a while to find one that was just right. I can't wait till next weekend!

I hope everyone has a great week!

When is spring break?

School has just started, and already I'm thinking of my next vacation. I've been watching Samantha Brown's "Passport to Latin America" on the Travel Channel. Laoch turned me on to this show. It's so fun to watch because I've been to many of the places she visits. Other places are on my list of places-to-visit-soon. The other day I watched the episodes on Cusco and Machu Picchu, Peru.  Those places are at the top of my list. They had a show on Panama City, which featured an Embera village. I had been to that exact village and even recognized some of the tribe members. Check out the pics on this Flickr page to see photos of these beautiful people.)

One of the upcoming shows will be on Granada, Nicaragua oh, how I love that city. I can't wait to go back. Another place they featured on the Travel Channel, which I've added to my list of future destinations is Santiago, Chile. A country that is shaped like a long string bean, well, that's just cool in itself.
