22 marzo What to do?Bad news. I didn't get the grant for the summer trip to Peru. I cried at the mailbox for a few minutes after reading my rejection letter. Oh well. I gave it my best. Now I've got to figure out what I'm going to do this summer. Taking a trip during summer vacation is a must. None of my Chicago friends have the luxury of a summer vacation, so I have no one to play with. I'm not complaining about vacation time. I'm just saying, when you're a single gal and don't have kids or a house to look after, it can get a little lonely after a while. Plus, everyone else is pissy at you because they don't have vacation. I end up spending way too much money as I roam around looking for things to do. This is why I always travel to third world countries in my summer vacation. It's much cheaper than staying at home. Where to plan my next trip? I've done Mexico about 10 times, so I'm kind of over that. Central America...well, I could hit Nicaragua again. I loved it there. I still haven't been to Honduras or El Salvador. Hmmm. Asia? Thailand? Cambodia? Such a damn long flight. Europe? Nah, doesn't appeal to me. Africa? Too scary and the airfare's super-expensive. Maybe I'll drop in on my friend in Colombia. A great idea for a woman traveling alone, right? jk 18 marzo Happy St. Pat'sI had plans this morning to go to brunch with a friend, but apparently she over-indulged in St. Pat's festivities and so she didn't call me until the afternoon. She admitted she had not come home until 4 am and would gladly crawl back into bed. I told her not to worry, that we'd reschedule our rendez-vous for another day. St. Pats day is such a big deal here in Chicago. They even dye the river water bright green. It's quite a spectacle- one that I have only witnessed on the news. I saw people decked out in kelly green lining up at bars at 11 am yesterday in downtown Chicago. Something about standing in long lines to go drink green beer to excess just doesn't appeal to me.
It's been a week and my cold has almost completely cleared up. I still have a mild cough that clings on, but hopefully that will be gone in a few days. That one really warm day last week was a cruel trick of nature. Five days ago I was running along the lakefront in a tank top. Now it's grey and cold again. Spring, please come back soon!
In the next couple of weeks I will find out if my summer travel dream will come true. I applied to attend a workshop for educators in the Amazon jungle of Peru. After a week in the jungle, studying the flora and fauna, I would go to Lima, Cuzco, and finally, Machu Picchu. All expenses for the trip would be paid by the grant. Wish me luck.
13 marzo Spring has sprung!Today is a warm and sunny day here in Chicago! I hope you are feeling the warmth wherever you are. I'm going for my first outdoor run of the year... see ya! 10 marzo rock onThanks to Thor, for sending me this story on how Obama rocked New York city.
I've been out of commission the last couple days trying to fight off a cold. A friend insists I should never say "I'm sick" - instead I should say, "I'm fighting something off". He claims that with my strong will to get better, plus some vitamin C, I can knock the cold out. It seems kind of silly to say that now, because clearly, I'm not winning this fight. The pile of used tissues next to my bed and the fact that I haven't left the house except for necessity (despite it being a balmy 50 degrees!) would attest to that.
I'm off to the restaurant around the corner to pick up some hot soup. Have a great weekend folks. 01 marzo GO- Bama, Part 2I wish I could have been at this rally in Austin. I think it looks like great fun. In case any of you missed it, I am a huge Obama fan. Watching him makes me get all tingly inside. I saw him speak at an event a few years ago, before he was elected as senator of Illinois. He truly is an amazing speaker with a passion and dedication which inspires me.
good TVI'm looking forward to watching Oprah's Building a Dream this Saturday evening. I missed it when it aired the first time this week because my cable wasn't working. From the previews I can tell I'll need to have a full box of tissues on hand when I watch this. I'm trying to figure out some way to integrate this show into my teaching. Let me know if you have any ideas. |
