Who y'all votin' for in '08?

My friend, Laoch, recently commented that it will be interesting to see how Barack Obama will poll in the West. So far things are looking real good for him. Here's the scoop:

Windy city

I just came home from having brunch downtown with a friend. On the way to the bus stop I almost got blown away. The gusts of wind coming off the lake were unbelievably strong. The waves on the lake looked about 10 feet high. According to the current forecast, it's 29 degrees, with gusts of wind of 40 mph. While having breakfast my friend and I noticed a group of several teenage girls in the restaurant wearing jean mini-skirts with bare legs. One of the girls was wearing flip-flops. Someone should help those girls. They need to be told that wearing flip-flops and mini-skirts in the month of February in Chicago is a very bad idea.

Oh, how I've changed

It is Friday night here in Chicago. This is my exciting line-up for the evening. (And don't infer any sarcasm. I'm being serious.)
  1. Do an hour of yoga (check)
  2. Meditate
  3. Eat dinner
  4. Wash the dishes
  5. Walk the dog (I'm dog-sitting)
  6. Read in bed
  7. Sleep (by 10 pm)

Not too long ago, my Friday night would have started with a shower, getting dolled-up, and a long outfit selection process. Then I'd head out for a cocktail or two, come home past midnight, eat some fattening food, fall into bed, and wake up feeling like crap. That's in the past. Something has come over. I've changed my ways. My priorities these days are my health, happiness, relationships, and work...more-or-less in that order. My lifestyle change is so dramatic that I hardly recognize myself. Who is that well-behaved girl with healthy lifestyle? Oh, that's me! I'm quite pleased with the changes. One of the positive effects is that I've been healthy all winter (I usually battle one cold after another). No more anxiety. No more insomnia and restless nights. My energy levels are way up- off the charts actually. Who knew this healthy living stuff actually works? You should try it. I'll lend you one of my yoga dvd's and a meditation cd to get you started.   ;-)

I want to be Rafe Esquith. He's a teacher extraordinaire. When I read his first book a few years ago, There Are No Shortcuts, I was in awe. He's come out with a new book called, Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire. His books should be required reading for all teachers. In fact, anyone would be inspired by his dedication and success. We need a lot more people like him on this earth.

There is hope

Watch this to see why I'm excited and hopeful for the future of my country, The United States of America. This movement makes me swell with pride and reminds me of why America is great country. We've been dragged through the mud by our shameful and incompetent leadership in the last 7 years. But things can change for the better. They will. They have to. I believe, do you?

Barack Obama- hip- hip- hooray!

GO- BAMA!

Unfortunately, I was not able to be in Springfield to be witness to Obama's historic announcement to run for President, since I had made previous plans to go to Minneapolis for the weekend. I attended a local celebration party in downtown Minneapolis.  A group of about 300 folks gathered at a mall to watch Obama's announcement and to pow-wow afterwards. The mayor of Minneapolis and other local politicians stepped up to support Our Man, Obama. The energy and enthusiasm was unforgettable. I was thrilled to see so many folks out to support Obama-  old, young, black, white, immigrants all joined together at this meeting...it was fantastic. People are really riled up about him - his energy and message of hope is enthralling.

If you are not from Illinois...or have been in a box for the last few years...perhaps you don't know who Barack Obama is.. click here to read all about him and watch his speeches.

surprise visitors

On a whim I checked my blog today, which I attend to sporadically these days.

I noticed some new commentors and "Congrats on being Space of the Week." I am the first to admit that I am totally undeserving. And this time the MSN folks did not even warn me. I had no idea it was coming.

So sorry to disappoint, but I had to do some emergency blog cleaning. No more pictures and no comments- at least for now. I'm just too busy to monitor comments right now. I'm in middle of doing a very important project that needs my undivided attention.

Thanks for stopping by....see ya'll later.

Bad astronaut

This news story about an astronaut charged with kidnapping and attempted murder is so bizarre. And the contrast between her mug shot and NASA photo is so disturbing.

below zero

According to Weather Channel it's -2 F degrees right now with a wind chill of -13 degrees. Ouch.

I'm at home bundled up in layers because, although my heaters are going full blast, I'm still cold in my apartment. I turned on the oven to add some heat and it seemed to help. I'm boiling water for tea. Tomorrow is supposed to be even colder than today. Despite wearing about 10 pounds of clothing, I still was frozen like a popsicle after only a few minutes of exposure this afternoon. I felt like that little kid in The Christmas Story movie- "I can't put my arms down!" The Mom replies, "Well...put your arms down when you get to school!". If you haven't seen that movie, rent it on one of these cold winter nights. It's funny as heck.  The list of my outdoor layers follows:

  • 2 pairs of socks
  • boots
  • leggings
  • jeans
  • 1 tank top
  • 2 long-sleeved shirts
  • 2 hooded sweatshirts
  • a knee-length coat
  • 2 pairs of gloves
  • a scarf (wrapped around my face mummy-style)

The Super Bowl's on. I'm half-watching it. I wouldn't be a good Chicagoan if I didn't watch it. The poor Bears are losing. I really hope they win, just so I don't have to face all the depressed kids at work tomorrow.
